Caring for Your Family’s Memorial: Maintenance Tips That Last
March 15, 2024A monument is a long-term investment in lasting tribute. Understanding what a warranty covers — and what it doesn’t — helps families make informed decisions and set realistic expectations for their memorial’s longevity.
What Quality Warranties Cover
Reputable monument companies typically warrant their products against manufacturing defects, including flaws in the granite itself and errors in engraving. A genuine warranty covers cracking or breakage resulting from defective material, fading of sandblasted lettering beyond normal weathering, and structural defects in the base and die assembly.
What Falls Outside Standard Coverage
Natural weathering is not a defect — granite changes over decades of outdoor exposure. Damage from lawnmowers, vandalism, vehicle accidents, and soil settlement are maintenance or insurance matters, not warranty claims. Cemetery regulations that require monument modification after installation also fall outside manufacturer responsibility.
The Importance of Documentation
When you receive your monument, obtain written documentation of any warranty coverage and keep it with your important papers. Future family members may need to reference this documentation years or decades later.
