Routine Cleaning

Biological growth — lichen, moss, algae — is the most common threat to a memorial’s appearance. These organisms attach to the stone surface and, over time, can etch the surface and make engravings harder to read. Gentle cleaning with a non-ionic detergent and soft brush removes surface growth without damaging the stone. Avoid household bleach, which can accelerate granite weathering over time.

Professional Cleaning

For significant biological accumulation or staining, professional cleaning with D/2 Biological Solution — the same product used by the National Park Service on historic monuments — is highly effective and safe for granite. This is worth scheduling every few years for older memorials.

What to Avoid

Pressure washing at high settings can damage surface finishes and engravings. Wire brushes scratch polished surfaces. Acidic cleaners (including some common household products) etch stone over time. When in doubt, gentler is always better.
