Planning a Memorial Service: Working With a Monument Company
September 15, 2024Granite comes in a wider range of natural colors than most families realize. Color selection affects not just aesthetics but also long-term appearance, visibility of engravings, and compatibility with cemetery regulations.
The Most Common Granite Colors
Black and dark gray granites (varieties like Jet Black, Midnight Black, and Dark Gray) provide the highest contrast for engraving and portrait etching. The polished surface of black granite shows lettering and imagery with exceptional clarity. These are the most common selections for upright monuments.
Gray varieties in medium tones offer a more traditional appearance familiar from older cemeteries. They show engravings clearly and weather with an appearance many families find appropriate for their dignity.
Red and pink granites, though less common for memorials, are deeply personal choices for some families and are permitted in many cemeteries. Lighter colors generally show engraving with less contrast than dark stones.
Regional Availability
Some granite colors are quarried regionally, which can affect cost and availability. Your monument dealer can show you samples of available colors and advise on any that may be more difficult to match for future additions.
Blackmon Memorials maintains a range of granite samples for families to evaluate in person. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
