Memorial Day and the Art of Remembrance
May 15, 2025Many families have old family memorials that have deteriorated significantly over time — leaning, broken, stained, or with engravings that are no longer legible. Monument restoration is often possible and far less costly than replacement.
Common Restoration Work
Resetting monuments that have shifted or tilted is among the most common restoration needs. Granite doesn’t deteriorate like limestone or sandstone, but the concrete bases and soil beneath can shift over decades. Re-leveling and re-setting a tilted monument restores both appearance and structural stability.
Cleaning and Restoration
Significant biological staining can be treated with professional cleaning processes that restore granite’s original appearance without damaging the stone. Lettering that has faded can sometimes be re-engraved to restore legibility — particularly valuable for very old family memorials where genealogical information might otherwise be lost.
When Replacement Is the Better Option
Cracked or broken monuments sometimes require replacement rather than repair. A reputable company will give you an honest assessment of whether restoration or replacement makes more sense for your situation.
